Conversation On High School Days Long Past

They looked at their old friends across the table in the casual restaurant. They weren’t there primarily to eat and drink. The purpose of this dinner for three old friends was to catch up on how their lives had turned out.

It had been ten years since graduation from their small-town high school and they had traveled back for the reunion. They had all planned this dinner to catch up on their individual paths in life. Tomorrow night at the reunion, it would be too hectic and filled with activities for a focused conversation.

Ted had been the typical jock during their high-school days. He wanted to relive those times he saved the game by running the football 40 yards down the field. He wanted to recall that kick through the goal posts that barely made it before the final buzzer sounded.

All the girls had wanted to go out with Tony. He and his date were elected prom king and queen senior year. He always teased Ted about the fact that he dated more cheerleaders even though Ted was the big football hero. Ted wasn’t concerned since he had enough girlfriends of his own.

Tim was an easygoing guy who hung out with his friends and enjoyed whatever activity was planned. He wanted to reminisce about those summer days when they all rode their diamondback bikes along the track that led to the swimming pool. After competing with each other for the best exhibition diving of the day, they laughed and talked all the way back home.

Yes, the three Ts, as they were referred to by everyone, were back together if only for a weekend. All divorced now, they spent a little time tearing down their ex-wives. Tony said Jeana had tried to cut up his clothes with a knife set someone gave them for a wedding gift.

Tim and Ted had divorce stories too, but much less drastic than Tony’s. In fact, Tim actually missed his ex-wife. She had been justified in divorcing him since he been involved in an affair with another woman from work. He really regretted losing her.

But, that was awhile ago. Tonight, all three men hoped to meet some old friends of the female variety and maybe hook up. After all, none of them wore those confining men wedding bands any longer. They wondered out loud who was fat and who was bald. They tried to figure out who might have ended up married to each other. The downed their second drinks and turned to the menu to order steak dinners.
