Mad Men Show and Narrow Ties
Mad Men is not just a phenomona on AMC, the wonderful vintage skinny neckties seen on the show are becoming a major trend in today’s fashion. The Mad Men television show takes place in the early 60′s when narrow neckties were the most popular. Now movie premiers everywhere are featuring the trendiest male music artists adopting the look and even mens designers are watching the show for inspiration on classic ties. If you want to try this vintage style then try finding authentic vintage 1950′s or 1960′s skinny neckties.
Wearing Skinny Ties:
Wearing Narrow or vintage ties allow the individual to dress up or down depending on the occasion. The best thing is that everyone from young boys to executives are pulling off this look which gives them an instant cool edge.
For business men, a patterned, sharp suit or plaid shirt can be paired with a solid vintage mens ties. Keep the look business like by picking a tie that is slightly skinnier than usual, creating the projection of self-assurance and authority. Make sure the color is also not too bright which can cause the outfit to be too much for business.
At a black tie occasion a skinny tie, combined with a traditional black suit and white button down shirt is a timeless look. For a lighter look, a skinny necktie can also be combined with a cotton shirt and a vest. Roll up the sleeves on a long sleeved shirt or go with short sleeves and add a striped or bold colored narrow tie to create an exciting and easy going style, perfect for young men.
Though thin neckties look wonderful, their narrowness means they are not always a great look for larger men. Buff, muscular men will feel more pulled together with a regular width tie. Also, the narrow necktie look is more appropiate the younger crowd. To still get the style of the Mad Man TV show, older men and more buff men can go with a necktie that is narrow, but somewhat wider than the 2 inch ties typically worn as narrow ties.
Pure silk neckties in soft light blues, muted grays, browns and greens accomplish the classic style that reined during the 1950′s and 1960′s. Of course, thin neckties in plaid, featuring graphics, eye catching reds, purples and oranges can also be worn. When going with a bold necktie remember that the more vivid the necktie is, the more tuned down the rest of the outfit should be, to keep from looking too busy.
Finding a Vintage Skinny Necktie
Thrift stores are a great place to look for vintage ties. For vintage inspired looks, several fashion designers have offered looks inspired by Mad Men. This includes fashion designer Michael Kors who has created an early 60s inspired line. Vintage neckties from the era can be purchased on the web as well. Skinny neckties direct from the 1950′s and 1960′s can be found with a google search.
