Sky Blue
Why is the sky only blue from below?
I know what causes the sky to be blue from below, but why isn’t the sky blue from above as well? If the molecules of the atmosphere scatter blue light in all directions, then the sky should look blue when viewed from space, and yet looking down on a land mass from space one sees clearly through the atmosphere no matter where the sun is with respect to you and the Earth beneath you. Why is this?
Also, Mie scattering supposedly causes the white light around the sun, but why is Mie scattering only seen around the sun in an otherwise clear sky with Rayleigh scattering everywhere else?
As viewed from above Earth, Earth is part of “the sky”. Remember, “the sky” does not necessarily mean “the atmosphere”. “The sky” was named in a time when people didn’t really know what it was, and that ignorance still prevails in our usage of the term today. Think of “the sky” as the name of AN IMAGE of everything that is distant, and not intuitively obvious connected to one’s immediate environment.
Indeed if you look at the fringes of the atmosphere of Earth you definitely see them as blue.

The reason why when looking down from a satellite that you can directly see the surface of Earth is that you are looking through a VERY THIN section of atmosphere, and on the other side of it, the Earth is brightly lit by the direct sunlight, and is MUCH BRIGHTER than the blue sky you usually see from below the atmosphere.
It is the thicker sections of atmosphere that scatter the light a lot more.
