Retro Narrow Neckties Are In Fashion Again
All good things are worth repeating. That is the case with mens skinny neckties. The style was introduced in the first part of the 20th century and hit its highest popularity during the 1950′s and 60′s, then made a youthful comeback in the 80′s. Now they are returning to fashion again with the likes of Leonardo DeCaprio, Will Arnett and other celebrities choosing narrow black neckties to wear with their tuxedos at the recent Acadamy Awards.
Narrow Neckties from the 20′s
It is regularly agreed that narrow mens neckties range in width from 1 to 3 inches across the widest section of the necktie. Both pointed ties and square end thin neckties during the first ten years of the last century were thin, ranging from 2 to 2 inches wide. Some ties measuring as narrow as 1 inches, were even referred to generally at the time as string neckties. Much didnt change the succeding decade due to lack of materials brought about by World War I. 2 inch wide neckties stayed fashionible throughout the 20′s and then went missing until the 50′s.
In the interim, according to Sarah Gibbings, in her fantastic volume “The Tie: Trends and Traditions”, the rationing of WW II left no funds, no surplus materials or manufacturing base in Europe. This propelled European men to turn to the new world for a new look, fashion to show off their forward looking postwar aspirations. The men sought bright colors and bold patterns, something positive and upbeat. The US responded with a move toward the wider, exciting and brightly colored ties which continued to dominate the 40′s and early 1950′s. Suit jacket lapels started to become broader and suits were buttoned lower, providing more area necessary to show off such a tie.
Narrow Neckties of the 1950′s
The American attitude of the mid 1950′s was restrained by the Korean War, Cold War and a recession. The more understated mood was reflected in mens style. Styles were becoming more conservative, with tighter trousers, less wide lapels and skinnier ties to match. Bright and dramatic color combinations were substituted by subdued patterns and solid colors. Thus the quintessential narrow black necktie was reborn.
Narrow neckties of the rockabilly era were the style among teenagers who were fans of celebrities such as Elvis who regularly wore thin neckties. By the middle of the 60′s ties as skinny as 1 inch were worn by conservative men and young men alike.
The 80′s Comeback of the Narrow Necktie
Thin ties made another appearance in the 1980′s, especially in the new wave music scene, which was a repudiation of the flowery and extravegant style of the 1970′s.
The Modern Trend Towards Narrow Ties
Narrow ties are here again. Just the other day attorney Anthony Romero, executive director of the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) made an appearance on the Colbert Report sporting a dark narrow necktie. During the show, Stephen Colbert asked him to show something wrong with him. After a brief glance at Colberts wide yellow foulard style necktie, Romero promptly replied, That tie is not my favorite, which predictably got lots of of laughs at the hosts expense.
