Ancient Wisdom in Birth and Mothering
In the 1960′s childbirth without medication was not done. It was standard procedure to rush laboring mothers to the hospital and administer a drug called “Twilight.” A majority of those babies were born blue due to stress from the drug and lack of response of the mother pushing.
It was taboo to breastfeed in that era. Only backwards, uninformed people would think of such a thing. I was told by one nurse that to suckle an infant was vulgar. ‘You can’t know whether or not the baby is getting enough milk because you can’t measure breastmilk’ claimed the doctors. ‘Since you cannot measure breast milk, it is dangerous to nurse.’ ‘Breastfed babies suffer from hunger!’
Those same doctors went on to say that order to get full nutrition you needed something that was proven by doctors to be nourishing for the baby. Following doctors’ orders, mothers fattened their babies with homemade formulas of pasteurized milk flavored with Karo syrup. These things occurred before the advent of manufactured artificial baby formula and disposable diapers.
Medical science had strayed too far from natural ways. Women began to ask their doctors questions.
In 1973, I was one of those young women trying to find the path back to God’s way of motherhood. I began to seek out answers. My questions were rebuffed by a doctor. I was treated as though I was dumb by the doctor. But something inside of me, an instinct as old as motherhood, raised itself and gave me confidence. I informed that doctor that there was nothing he could do to stop me from having my baby at home, including calling Child Protection Workers. If I had to, I would hide to have my baby, AND I would nurse her no matter what he thought.
My lone battle isn’t what won the war, though. Many voices are required for real change. _ Such change requires a widespread outcry. Rather than accept the latest recommendations, women in the 60′s started writing books about how to give birth naturally, how to breastfeed effectively and how to bond with your baby rather than allow your little one to be carted off to a nursery. The homeschooling movement was born in that time of transition. Since that time there have been hundreds, maybe thousands of books written concerning these subjects but it was the pioneers who blazed the trails that wrote with a passion birthed from their struggles, and even rebellion. Those pioneering women gave other young mothers the confidence to shout, “Yes, I WILL do this!”
Now because a few courageous authors used their voices and their pens, blue babies and twilight births are a thing of the past. A doctor that claimed breastfeeding was vulgar or unsafe would lose all credibility. Today, the first generation of naturally birthed, homeschooled children are educated, successful parents homeschooling their own healthy, happy offspring. The old adage, ‘Mother knows best’ has been proven when it comes to babies.
Those books gave me and other mothers valuable information about natural methods even if the author wasn’t always a believer. I was the beneficiary of their desire to inform.
In writing The Vision by Debi Pearl, I hope to carry on their fine tradition. The women of the 1960′s shared their passion for information, and it is my hope that in writing The Vision I have shared some of my own with those who come after me.
